Allopathic Physician (M.D)
Duties and responsibilities:
Physicians
examine patients, obtain medical histories order, perform and interpret diagnostic
tests, and prescribe and administer treatment for people suffering from injury
or disease. Physicians work in one or more
specialties, including, among others:
- Anesthesiology
- Family and general medicine
- General internal medicine
- General pediatrics
- Obstetrics and gynecology
- Psychiatry
- Surgery
Salary:
Physicians
typically earn over $150,000 per year, with many earning more.
Education:
There are
126 allopathic medical schools in the United States, including three in
Virginia (Medical College of Virginia, University of Virginia School of
Medicine, and Eastern Virginia Medical School). Most MD programs require
4 years of study, including emphasis on basic science, clinical work, and
social science.
The first two years of most programs are generally aimed at classroom learning of basic science as it relates to medicine. Subsequent years of most programs then focus on clinical training.
